SHELVES IS HIGH (aka return of the rap purge)

15 years ago, I went through a major purge of my rap records when I was in the process of unboxing all 40 boxes dedicated to that part of my collection (the photo above are those literal boxes). I documented roughly half the process back then but as has happened all too often on here: I started a series of posts and then tailed off into nada.

Well, it’s 2026 and I’m doing this again because, for whatever dumb reason, when I went through the previous purge, it didn’t occur to me to catalog my rap records into Discogs. I was 100% using the site then so I don’t know why I didn’t just hit “Add to Collection” at the time but whatever the case: I never did then and this fall, I’m finally getting back around to it and once again: I’m documenting the process.

This time around though, I’m doing it as a Substack newsletter: Shelves is High. And yes, as I wrote in my “state of the site” post, today’s newsletters are yesterday’s blogs with new branding but whatever: I got into blogging because I was curious about “this new thing”, same thing with podcasting and social media and… You get the point. But, right now, I haven’t done a big launch of Shelves Is High and instead, are giving the blog subscribers here the sneak peak of the first three posts. Hope you enjoy!
