STATE OF SOUL SIDES (FALL 2026)

The original Soul Sides blog logo from 2003. Can it be it was all so simple then?

This post is mostly for the OGs who’ve been following this site since before my kid was born—she’s graduating college now to put this into perspective—but if you’re new to Soul Sides: hello!

Here’s the deal: the original lifespan of Soul Sides, as an active blog, spanned from the early/mid-2000s until the early 2010s, basically mirroring the rise and fall of the blog era in general. I’ve surely written about this at some point over the past 20+ years but for me, the rise of social media absorbed so much of the energy that formerly went into people reading blogs, leaving comments, etc. And hey, I’m just as guilty of that as anyone: it’s not a coincidence that posts on here rapidly began to fall off around the same I was spending more time on Facebook and later Instagram, etc. For a long spell, if I posted on here, it was social-media-esque updates on new mixes or the like: the core content fell by the wayside.

Over those intervening years, I occasionally made half-hearted attempts to resurrect things on here but the reality is Soul Sides is effectively an archive that I opt to preserve because this site has been incredibly, unpredictably good to me over the years in terms of opportunities it created and people I’ve met through it. But it’s heyday as a “creative platform” is long past and I don’t want to make false promises to anyone, myself included, about it returning to some kind of relevancy when I know that’s not where my energies lie.

I still like writing and talking about music. That’s never going to change and I assume a decent number of folks here already follow my Soulsides IG account which is where I post things that I would have once posted here. And likewise, I still will use this site to add updates on various projects that I think people might be interested in. The irony though is that some of those projects involve creating work that is very much “blog-like”—I mean, newsletters are just blogs with new-old branding—and yet I feel more motivation to create content over on other platforms than my own.

Does that make sense to me? Not entirely but it is what it is. And regardless, Soul Sides isn’t getting shut down. I’ll dutilly pay my annual domain name fees to keep it here because it’s literally the least I can do. And who knows? Maybe at some future point, I’ll really make a good faith effort to resurrect things but for now, just know that I’m still around, still wild about records, still taking pleasure in writing and recording thoughts about them, and Soul Sides will forever be part of who I am as a writer, DJ, record collector, et. al.

Thanks to all of you who have been a part of this site for the past 20+ years.
