I last wrote about this 7″ in 2006. It is, by far, the rarest record I own. From what I know, it’s one of only a handful of copies known in circulation.
Not because I’m desperate for cash, especially after this, but I realized I’ve been holding onto this for 10 years now mostly because it’s hella rare. And I’m not knocking that mentality; it has its time and place and believe me, there are certainly other records that I’ve held onto for all kinds of illogical reasons. But I’ve reached a point where rarity-for-the-sake-of-rarity just doesn’t really make any sense to me. Life’s too short to hoard stuff whose primary value (to me at least) is that no one else has it.
So my purge will be someone’s gain. But in the meanwhile, I wanted to share the entire single with ya’ll, high-Q for a change. It’s all I will have left too. (Well, that and the reissue!)
Good for you Oliver. I’m in worse shape than you right now. I’m 24 and I’ve been collecting DVDs ever since I bought a DVD drive for my computer back in high school. I own close to 700 DVDs, and I probably haven’t seen or opened about 250 of them. What’s worse is that I catch myself just staring at all of them until I settle with watching a movie ON NETFLIX. I’m in the process of selling them on eBay, because I came to the same revelation; I can’t keep these films just so I can tell other people that I own it. I’m sick of telling people “yeah, I own it, but I haven’t seen it yet.” It just sounds idiotic.

I also agree with you here. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older (on the other hand I know some old still-crazed collectors), but I’m much more at ease with letting rarer records go… especially those that I’m don’t listen to. I think the one somewhat-regretful purge I recently made was selling off a mint copy of Relatively Clean Rivers Lp (http://www.popsike.com/RELATIVELY-CLEAN-RIVERS-LP-Orig-CA-Rural-PSYCH-Folk-NM/130231876953.html). I loved everything about that record, but it helped fund a summer vacation for the family. That’s allowed me to sleep at night. ; )

I’m kind of moving backwards with all this. I took a few major collection losses through the years and have been trying to rebuild since 2005. I’ve been on a mid 90s rap record mission to replace my crates and find new gems, but this is like the worst time to buy EVER. I’ll still try to replace some of my funk crates here and there, but only by digging, not ebaying, too expensive.
Vinyl is an ill addiction. I’m literally getting close to losing my apartment and my car is falling apart, but still my dumb ass is buying $80 limited releases and paying out the ass for records that were in dollar bins earlier this century. Ehhh..
