When I first started taping the Shades of Soul, I made a conscious decision not to do
them as podcasts, partially because I wanted to create a separate identity for them away from my pre-existing podcast series, The Sidebar. However, I’ve been taping SOS shows for over a year now and not coincidentally, The Sidebar has been silent for over a year now. It’s time I finally unite the siblings.
I’ve started to upload specific SOS episodes into the Sidebar feed (RSS or iTunes links). Unless by specific request, I don’t think I’m going to upload every single show (almost all of which are on available on both Mixcloud and RadioSombra.org) but I’ve begun pulling out those shows I liked best.
The trio I’ve already uploaded:
Again: you can download them either through the direct RSS feed or iTunes (though iTunes may not have updated their server with the latest shows yet).
Shades of Soul, EP 2.19: Grab Bag by Soul-Sides.Com/O. Wang on Mixcloud
A mix of old and new joints for this episode. I was overdue for a grab bag post anyway so this seemed more…efficient. But for real, next post (I hope) will be a long-awaited break down of a slew of tracks I’ve gotten in over the summer.
Shades of Soul, EP 2.18: Donny Hathaway Special by Soul-Sides.Com/O. Wang on Mixcloud
Thanks to Emily Lordi, I realized that 10/1/14 would have been Donny Hathaway’s 69th birthday and in tribute to one of the great ones, I did a whole show around Hathaway-related recordings, including a few rarities and a slew of classics.
Shades of Soul, EP 2.17: End of Summer by Soul-Sides.Com/O. Wang on Mixcloud
Forgot to post this two weeks back but I heralded the end of the season with a combination of songs I first learned about over the last few months plus a few personal favorite tracks to send summer off into the sunset. Enjoy! (And I’m back on the air 2pm PST on Friday, Oct. 3).
I’ve been derelict in updating folks (here) on my recent Shades of Soul radio shows. On EP 2.15, I invited DJ Rani D (Soul In the Park) to come talk about his favorite summer songs and he laced us with a sweet mix of Angolan records:
Shades of Soul, EP 2.15: Summer Jams with DJ Rani D by Soul-Sides.Com/O. Wang on Mixcloud
And then last Friday, I had on author Amanda Petrusich, whose new book Do Not Sell At Any Price: The Wild, Obsessive Hunt for the World’s Rarest 78rpm Records is one of the best books on record collecting ever written. We had a great convo about her book, about the world of collecting, and she prepped four summer 78s for us to listen to.
Shades of Soul, EP 2.16: Summer James feat. author Amanda Petrusich by Soul-Sides.Com/O. Wang on Mixcloud
Shades of Soul, EP 2.14: Summers James with DJ Soft Touch by Soul-Sides.Com/O. Wang on Mixcloud
Clifton, aka DJ Soft Touch, might damn well be the best dressed DJ in town (provided, it might be a low bar but seriously, Clifton is dapper). He’s a long-time resident at Funky Sole but also DJs at both the Standard and Ace Hotels (downtown), Rubbish in North Hollywood, and many other parties around the city.
He put together a pair of sweet sets for our summer song series (my actual spins marked by an *):
*Ronnie Foster: Summer Song (remix from The New Groove)
Style Council: Headstart for Happiness
Six Feet Under: She’s Not There
Barbara Acklin: Am I the Same Girl
Curtis Harding: Keep on Shining
Small Faces: I Feel Much Better
*Kenny Dope Unreleased Project: Comin’ Inside
Dodgy: Good Enough
Mighty Ryaders: Evil Vibrations
The Exits: You Got to Have Money
Derek Martin: Sly Girl
Boogaloo Assassins: No No No
Jerry Jones: Compared to What
Shades of Soul EP 2.13: Summer Jams feat. Miles Tackett by Soul-Sides.Com/O. Wang on Mixcloud
For my latest Shades of Soul (summer) episode, I invited Miles Tackett (FB/Twitter) to join. Folks know him best as the founder of Breakestra and for the very long-running weekly Funky Sole party. He’s got a new album out: Fool Who Wonders and I invited him in to talk about the album, his career and a few of his favorite summer jams.
Shades of Soul, EP 2.12: Summer Jams. feat. DJ Expo by Soul-Sides.Com/O. Wang on Mixcloud
For my latest Shades of Soul (summer) episode, I invited DJ Expo, of L.A.’s Motown on Mondays fame.
As I’m doing all summer, I asked my guests to bring in a slew of summer songs and Expo came with a smooth selection, including that DeRobert and Half-Truths 7″ I totally snoozed on.
Shades of Soul, EP 2.11: Summer Jams feat. Morgan Rhodes by Oliver Wang on Mixcloud
For my latest Shades of Soul (summer) episode, I invited DJ and music supervisor, Morgan Rhodes. Morgan and I frequently pair up for the new music segment every Tuesday on KPCC and she, herself, hosts an early morning show on KPFK and used to be at KCRW. She’s pretty much hit for the L.A. public radio cycle.
As I’m doing all summer, I asked my guests to bring in a slew of summer songs and while I kind of f—ed up her playlist by accident, it all worked out in the end.
Shades of Soul continues its Summer 2014 Series with our old friend, DJ Phatrick of Heartbreak Radio, Devil’s Pie, Libre, etc. He talks about (and we’ll bump) his new summer music mix, Float.
You can listen to the entire episode at our Radio Sombra page (no Mixcloud for this ep).
My playlist of songs at the beginning:
- The Lost Generation: This Is the Lost Generation
- The Manhattans: Give Him Up
- Saun and Starr: Gonna Take Time
- Quantic feat. Fruko and Michi Sarmiento: Descarga Cuantico
- The San Francisco TKOs: Ooh Baby Baby
Phatrick’s playlist is available on Soundcloud.
In our next episode, June 20, our Summer Jams guest will be DJ/music supervisor Morgan Rhodes (and possibly one other!)
