I created Soul Sides 20 years ago because I wanted an outlet to write about my favorite records. The blog era feels bygone — and I clearly stopped regularly updating the site years ago — but the impulse to talk about records has never faded. It’s why I’ve created podcasts and newsletters but to mark the (quiet) 20th anniversary for Soul Sides — which has given me so much over the years — I wanted to create an homage to the record zines of the ‘80s/‘90s. This isn’t as comprehensively discographic as those OG zines but I imagine this is what Soul Sides could have looked like in ’84 or ’94 instead of ’04. So here it is: The Snapback, #1.
Side A = seven 45s, Side B = seven LPs. For this first issue, I wanted to go with a random assortment (very blog-y!) but I’ll likely get more thematic in thee future. I also mixed together 14 songs — one from each entry — for your listening pleasure.
Here’s the deal for people who still follow/read this blog: I’m putting aside five copies and I’ll send out for free (in the U.S.). Just leave a comment on this post and then send me an email with your address. Besides the ‘zine, first five folks also get a copy of Incognitos Vol 1 on cassette.
I’ll wait until after Thanksgiving and then share news about the ‘zine with everyone else through my other channels (social media, newsletter, etc.). I wanted to honor those of you who still follow the site, first.
You don’t have to send me anything but this super cool to see! Congrats on 20 years.
