Fonce Mizell passed away yesterday. He was one-half of one of the distinctive and beloved production duos of the 1970s (and via sampling, of the 1990s, you might say).
Check out Jeff Chang’s interview with the Mizell Brothers, at the Red Bull Music Academy, from a few years back.
And most definitely check out Matthew Africa’s 2010 tribute to the Mizells.
Daaaamn. RIP.
Mizell bros were so ill and influential. I love the fact that they did their thing with the straight up classic production on all those records and then just retired early and chilled in Cali for years.
Not sure if I’m being correct here and I’m not sure what the latest years had brought for them, but anyways, RIP Fonce, you made some of my favorite music of all time.
Very sad news and so young too… My thoughts go out to his family.
