The Sidebar #3: Jesse Thorn

For The Sidebar #3, I interview Jesse Thorn, creator/host of public radio’s The Sound of Young America as well as podcast overlord of Maximumfun.org. Jesse – who still produces his show/podcast out of his living room – was a major inspiration behind me creating The Sidebar since being interviewed by him, at his home studio, made me realize I didn’t need a professional station studio to put something together.
In our near-hour convo, we talk about how TSOYA got its start, the joys of cooking blondies for donors, and how “Rich Girl,” is the jam.
This show’s music:
- The Hold Steady: Consecutive Summer (From Stay Positive. Vagrant, 2008)
- Hall and Oates: Rich Girl (From Bigger Than the Both Of Us. RCA, 1977)
- Brother Ali: Good Lord (From The Truth is Here. Rhymesayers, 2009)

I really enjoy your interviews. I like how they cover elements of your world that really fly under the radar of traditional media.
“Rich Girl” is the jam?
I second that.
