Jimmy Bishop: On Stage Live at the Nixon Theater (Meka, 196?)

One of the greatest live R&B albums I’ve ever heard, especially for fans of Philadelphia soul. Exceptionally well recorded for a live show and peep the label scans for the line-up; outstanding. This features an exceptionally bugged out, echo box version of Billy Stewart singing “Summertime” (second sound clip). Psychedelic!

Ciel Miner: This Is For the People (Car-Dor, 196?)

Obscure jazz vocal LP from New Jersey. Features one of the most stunning versions of “Stardust” I’ve ever heard. This is one of those cuts Gilles Peterson or Jazzman Gerald tends to comp (but hasn’t yet!). This is a sealed original, definitely not a reissue.

Cover: SEALED
Sound: SEALED (but I included a sound clip I recorded from my personal copy of the LP)

Luigi: The Innovator of Jazz Technique (Hoctor, 197?)

The rarest of Luigi’s LPs for the Hoctor dance label. Features several funky drum-break laden “The Last Stretch.”

Ernestine Anderson: Live From Concord To London

A gorgeous album, recorded live at both the Concord Jazz Festival and Ronnie Scott’s in London. Features one a surprisingly funky (and lovely) version of “Love For Sale.” Folks sleep on this but Anderson really kills this version.

Johnny Rivera and the Tequila Brass: S/T (Musirama/Cotique, 1968)

Rivera was part of the early wave of boogaloo artists signed onto Cotique, alongside Joey Pastrano, the Lebron brothers and the New Swing Sextet. Produced by George Goldern himself, this is a heavily soul-influenced album, featuring such tracks as “Boogaloo Que La Traigo,” “You Gotta Have Soul,” and “Sonny’s Boogaloo.”

Cover: VG (taped up heavily)
Sound: VG+

Ricky Womack and Christian Essence: Do You Love the Lord (C.E. Records, 197/8?)

Awesome, private press, gospel modern soul out of San Diego, CA. Great vocals and arrangements on here with that classic early ’80s R&B feel.

Cover: NM (still in shrink)
Sound: NM (the disc itself has a slight dish warp, doesn’t affect sound at all)
