SCORPIO BEAT BATTLE

Scorpio 256x300
The 2nd Soulstrut Beat-Off is up and running (yes, I know how that sounds). This time, it’s “Scorpio” up at the plate.

BIZARRE TRIBE: REMIXES DONE RIGHT

Let me be real: when I first heard of this project, my initial thought was, “oh good god, this is like some throwback-packers wet dream but haven’t we pillaged the depths of the golden era catalog enough already?” Sure, I love the Pharcyde and Tribe but the idea of mashing up the former’s lyrics over beats inspired by the latter just seemed too nostalgia-sizzled. It’d be like bringing back Cross Colours gear or something.

But then I listened to the whole thing and even I couldn’t resist. This is great. And not simply because it is […]

MY SUMMER PLAYLIST

IMG_2945.jpg

This is the first year where I’m putting the Summer Songs series on hold – too much else going on – but that doesn’t mean my summer listening has disappeared or anything. The thing is though…in any given summer, my heaviest rotation songs are almost never from that actual summer and 2012 (so far) is no different. Here’s the top rundown:

Lianne La Havas: Is Your Love Big Enough?
From digital single (Nonesuch, 2012)

Lily Allen: Smile (Mark Ronson Revisit)
From internet single (2007)

Cloud Control: Just For Now

BETTYE SWANN: MAKING US HERS

swann.jpg
Bettye Swann: Make Me Yours
I Will Not Cry
From 7″ (Money, 1967).

Make Me Yours (CD Mix)
Make Me Yours (“Remix”)
From The Money Recordings

Bettye Swann: (My Heart Is) Closed for the Season
From 7″ (Capitol, 1968). Also on Bettye Swann.

When my man Vinnie got married, he had some custom 7″s pressed (class move, always) and on one side was Bettye Swann’s “Make Me Yours.” That’s a damn high compliment but who would deny that Swann’s song earns it?

The song not […]

WEDDING DAZE

Billy Stewart: Cross My Heart
From 7″ (Chess, 1968). Also on The Best Of.

Cupid: Cupid Shuffle
From Time For a Change (Atlantic, 2007)

Biz Markie/Pharcyde: Passin’ Biz By (O-Dub’s Blend)

As I mentioned a few weeks back, I had the privilege of traveling out to Charleston SC to DJ a wedding by a couple I had never met but who were fans of the site. (Thanks again KF!)

Really fun evening, especially since the groom’s father is a guitarist who has had his own band for years now and […]

MANY STYLES MANY STYLES

A few months back I put out a remix challenge to folks who wanted to mess around with “Your Love,” done by the Many Styles of Bobby Day. I wanted to share two of the entries that came in:

Time Bandits: Can’t Explain (Your Love)
Remix by Time Bandits Music

Many Styles of Bobby Day: Your Love (Muttley Edit)

MI CANCIÓN EDICIONES

I’m by no means “a producer” but I know enough basic (and I do mean basic) audio editing to be able to do small little edits of stuff on the fly. Here’s two recent examples of songs I liked but just though I could improve on a bit for my purposes (i.e. DJing).

Zambrano: La Cocona (Original)
La Cocona (Edit)
Originally from 7″

In the case of the Zambrano, the OG was perfectly fine for what it was but you compare with how the song opens to that unexpectedly funky bridge and […]

SUMMER SONGS 2010: LOREN KAJIKAWA

Scott Down and DJ Cutler: Track 10 [“A Day in the Life”]
From Ultimate Breaks and Beatles (LO DO, 2009)

(Editor’s Intro: I first met Loren when he was an undergrad at UC Berkeley and he was already showed all the signs of being an extraordinary music scholar. In the time since, we’ve become good friends – not to mention co-enablers in culinary excess – and now he’s Dr. Loren Kajikawa, musicology professor at the U. of Oregon. He’s currently working on a scholarly book analyzing hip-hop – I’ve been enjoying his Dr. Dre chapter […]

BOBBY DAY: SHOW YOUR MANY STYLES

Many Styles of Bobby Day: Your Love
From 7″ (Byrdland, 196?)

Don’t know how I forgot to post this earlier but this 7″ is one of my favorite examples of how you can combine sweet soul and some hard funk together in an incredible package. I’m not even going to explain what makes this so good – seriously, if you can’t figure it out within the first 15 seconds, it’s not worth trying harder. One thing though: Jerry Ford does a version of this song (not as good, IMO) but I can’t tell who is […]
