“WORLD’S FUNKIEST COVERS” CD GIVEAWAY + UPCOMING GIG

The folks at Cultures of Soul have a new CD/LP out – World’s Funkiest Covers – and obviously, this is of interest to moi! There’s some of my personal favorites on here, including Nostalgia 77′s wicked remake of “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes and, of course, Ray Barretto’s epic “Pastime Paradise” cover.

You can peep some samples off the album below:

THE SIDEBAR #14: SASHA FRERE-JONES

Apologies for the hiatus since the last Sidebar1 but this one arrives just on time with the end of summer nearing. Sasha Frere-Jones is the pop music critic for The New Yorker as well as culture editor for The Daily and, generally speaking, has been one of the definitive voices on pop music of the past 10 years.

I first “met” Sasha about 10 years back, through a now-defunct listserv (remember those?) for other music writer nerds. It was extremely gratifying to see him [...]

A LITTLE BIT OF FUNK(MASTER) GOES A LONG WAY

Regardless of what you think of “Otis,” the new song from Jay-Z and Kayne West’s Watch the Throne, you can’t deny that it just sounds better when Funk Flex is introducing it. So many classic lines here despite all the incessant backspinning.

SIDEBAR #11: NOZ OF COCAINE BLUNTS

Andrew Nosnitzky (aka Noz) has been blogging since the primordial days of the craft. His Cocaine Blunts site is one of the interweb’s most respected sources for rap obscurity and despite assumptions otherwise, it’s not driven by hype-of-the-moment like so many other hip-hop-oriented blogs trying to get their adshare numbers up (not knocking the hustle, just saying though).

Noz was actually one of the first people I interviewed for The Sidebar but I decided to hit reset on that OG convo and instead, try out an idea: an audiobiography, i.e. a discussion of music filtered [...]

SIDEBAR #10: DJ CAPTAIN PLANET

I met Charlie Bethel aka Chuck Wild aka Captain Planet through his brother Wil (aka DJ Murphy’s Law), my old DJing partner at the Short Stop. At the time, Chuck was living out in Brooklyn, but last fall, he picked up and moved West, landing out here in L.A.

As Captain Planet, he’s been responsible for three Afro-Latin flavored EPs on Bastard Jazz thus far: Gumbo Funk (2005), Speakin’ Nuyorican (2009) and the just-released NinganĂ©. He’s also at work on his first full-length, Cookin’ Gumbo, due out later this fall, also on Bastard Jazz.

Chuck also [...]

MY SUMMER SOUNDTRACK (SO FAR)

251683_10100479244322343_1235966_58926591_144651_n.jpg
The last four weeks have been…awesome. Every day, I wake up and I get to write and write and write, usually pausing to get my noodle soup on. I’m trying to hammer my way through revising enough of this project to get it off to my publisher (the beginning of the end…but nowhere near “the end”). It’s great for my academic career, not so great for doing other stuff (hence why I’m writing this post at 11:36pm).

I love the Summer Songs series but this year, I just had to take a [...]

Quantic Y Su Conjunto Los Miticos Del Ritmo: Get UR Freak On
They Reminisce Over You
From Hip Hop En Cumbia EP (Tru Thoughts 2011)

Been waiting for this one to come out for months now – Quantic and company take on a few hip-hop classics and run it through the cumbia-treatment. Quantic first started this a couple of years back with his “Cumbia De Dilla” and then followed that last year with “Dre En Cumbia.” Here’s the entire tracklisting:
A1. Step Into A World (Rapture’s Delight)
A2. Dre [...]

THE SIDEBAR #6: KEVIN HOWES ON THE NEW MOWEST ANTHOLOGY

Kevin “Sipreano” Howes helped compile and write the liners for the brand spanking new compilation on Light In the Attic: Our Lives Are Shaped By What We Love: Motown’s Mowest Story 1971-1973. The comp anthologizes 16 songs from the short-lived Motown subsidiary label, Mowest, which boasted an eclectic roster including everyone from ’60s pop star Frankie Valli to an early iteration of the Commodores to Stevie Wonder’s one-time wife, Syreeta Wright, amongst other, one-off discoveries like Odyssey, Lodi and Suzee Ikeda.

Howes talked to us about discovering Mowest, a background of the label (and [...]
