Thanks again to Michael Barnes of the Melting Pot for letting me sub his show this past Sunday. It’s been at least six years that I had to host a show on my own and let’s just say it’s not like learning to ride a bicycle again. More like trying to remember how to cook a recipe!
The total show was 2 hours but a recording snafu killed the last 40 minutes so here’s the first 80 minutes of the show, including mic breaks.
Here’s the total playlist:
DJ Day: Drum Track #2 Perez [...]

By O-Dub It’s my birthday today (that’s right, me, Sean Penn and De Niro, motherpluckers). Since I’ve already given myself a birthday gift, I wanted to share one with all of you.
Before me and Wil’s weekly party at the Short Stop ended, we had planned on making a mix-CD together, dedicated to all slow jams. Alas, we never managed to put that together before the night ended but I still have my half of it. The zip file has 10 songs individually saved but the whole thing goes together in a mix.
Boogaloo 2: The Slow [...]

By O-Dub I’m in the middle of another assignment/teaching storm but two things:
1) If you’re not listening to Matthew Africa’s Best of Luv N’ Haight podcast, you wack. This is basically what I was geeking out over ten years ago and most of this STILL sounds fresh as hell. Courtial! Darondo! Leno Spencer! Sugar Pie! So so awesome.
2) Likewise, Thes One and DJ Day join forces, Palm Springs style. Cooler than a dip in the Ace pool.
3) And if that’s not enough, I put together an hour long gospel soul mix for Aquarium Drunkard [...]

By O-Dub I put out this mix-CD last year; it was supposed to air on Galactic Fractures back then but technical problems prevented that from happening.
Never too late though. It’s now available for your streaming pleasure. (And don’t forget, the mix is still avail for purchase here).
By O-Dub I’ve been meaning to digitize my old mixtapes for a long time and finally got around to it. The only actual tape–>digital transfer I’ve made in recent years was Headwarmers, which I put together back in 1997 (I’ll be making a copy of this available for free download eventually). The next volume, Mixtification (O’s Dub Vol. 7) came out in early 1998.
I have to say, it’s been fun revisiting this era though I’m also struck at how many songs I probably would never [...]

I hate to pick on something done for charity but can we just talk about how stunningly terrible this is? Four things off the top of my head (just so I don’t explode in criticism):
1) It’s been a quarter century since the OG “We are the World.” Are you telling me no one could find a way to write a new ensemble song? Are you f—-ing kidding me?
2) Bringing back video of the original artists – MJ for example – was tacky. And again, says something very poor about the current state of popular music.
3) [...]
