The EMP Pop Conference just finished up in L.A. this past weekend. For those unfamiliar (and really, my readers should be familiar), over its 10 years, the Pop Conference has become the most interesting and important annual convalcade of scholars, journalists, musicians and related folk. This was the first year it was not held in Seattle (next year, it will rotate to NYU) and as I’ve done in a few previous years, I wanted to provide a short write-up of the proceedings and more importantly, what I learned along the way.
Before [...]

Perez Prado: San Luis Blues Tequila From El Unico (Dimsa, 197?)
Despite the presumed ubiquity of data in a digital era, there’s a surprising amount of information gaps out there when it comes to even the most famous and prolific of artists. Perez Prado, one of Latin music’s most heralded figures, put out a striking number of funk-influenced albums in the 1970s but trying to keep an accounting of them is harder than you might imagine. The various discographies out there are incomplete and mismatched and that’s not even because of [...]

Basically, two of my favorite DJs (who’ve had huge impacts on me, musically), sitting down for a long chat.
2 Hype.
 File under: I slept.
I’ve seen the soundtrack to Patty for years but somehow, completely missed out on listening to it despite a rather solid lineup that includes tracks from the stable of New Jersey’s Stang.1 It wasn’t until I was hanging out in the Groove Merchant the other month and Cool Chris threw this on the house system, I realized, “damn, how’d this pass me by?”
Some of the songs on here were pre-existing, such as the Moments’ slinky bit of seduction soul:
The Moments: Sexy Mama From Patty OST (Stang, [...]

I’ve been saving up a few goodies to sell, especially in some select genres like Latin, gospel and jazz, plus some 45s again. Help yourself to some choice vinyl and hey, it helps support what I do too.
February 2011 set sale.
For a while, I had been trying to land a cheap 7″ copy of Leroy Hutson’s “All Because Of You,” one of his best proto-disco tracks from the 1970s. The song has everything you’d want: opening drum break, rich and powerful production, Hutson’s vocals, etc. and it’s always nice to have a compact version on 7″. But when I finally got a copy and was listening to it, something jumped out at me, seemingly literally:
Leroy Hutson: All Because of You (7″ version) From 7″ (Curtom, 1975)
Listen at around 1:50 or so. Sounds like a [...]

Here’s what they think about you.
I don’t mean this in the playful Cee-Lo way either. Did someone forget Guru? Or just decide he wasn’t as important as, say, Ronnie Chasen?
