I’ve been revisiting the music of Pete Rodriguez lately after realizing how little of his catalog I had ever bothered to really sit with. Sure, I had been a fan of his big hits – “I Like It Like That,” “Oh That’s Nice”, “Micaela” for a while but I had never explored much else until I was asked to write the liner notes for Right On! Ahi Na Ma! and found myself digging back into Pete’s recordings (not the least [...]

Stranger Cole: Crying Every NIght From 7″ (Treasure Isle, 1969/1970). Also on Bangarang.
U-Roy and Hopeton Lewis: Tom Drunk From 7″ (Trojan, 1970). Also on Your Ace From Space.
The thing I love about being totally underinformed when it comes to riddims is discovering both re-uses of certain riddims, or in this case, the originating riddim. I got turned onto “Tom Drunk” because of Reflection Eternal and certainly, if there’s any song that’s associated with this riddim, it’s the U-Roy single. Huge hit, big deal for him at that point in his career.
But [...]

Fajardo Y Sus Estrellas: El Burro Boogaloo Descarga de Kiki From Fajardo’s Boogaloo (Kubaney, 1967/8)
Joe Quijano: El Loco No Me Digas Na’ From The Party Album (Cesta, 1967/8)
Ray Terrace: Manteca From Home of Boogaloo (Tower, 1968)
Boogaloo’s popularity compelled many artists to record boogaloo albums even if they weren’t born n’ bred for the style (which is to say, younger, Nuyorican, doo-wop raised, and non-Latin music purists). In some cases, that resulted in some truly awful boogaloo albums that [...]

The Hassles: 4 O’Clock In the Morning From 7″ (UA, 1968).
The Hassles: 4 O’Clock In the Morning From Hour of the Wolf (UA, 1969). Also on Billy Joel and the Hassles.
One of the best/worst things about getting hooked on the 7″ as a format is that you feel compelled to find 7″ versions of LP songs you really like. It makes good sense – why not tote along a louder, smaller version of a great song instead of the full (and often quieter) LP? It’s just an expensive habit, especially in those [...]

Ozzie Torrens: Mia’s Boogaloo Day Tripper From Boogaloo In Apartment 41 (Decca, 1967)
It’s been a hot minute since I’ve written much on anything boogaloo. I haven’t abandoned my interest but I basically got backlogged with so many Latin soul records over the last couple of years, it had the weird effect of suffocating my interest in actually writing about them. Thankfully, Torrens LP – a longtime “want” – finally came through and having only been acquainted with the title track, I didn’t realize how frickin’ great this LP was.
Had I ever [...]

A few days ago, my friend Todd hit me up on IM and asked if knew what the sample was to this:
Shad: Rose Garden From TSOL (Fontana North, 2010)
Hadn’t caught this last year (song/video appeared early summer 2010) but was instantly smitten by the production.1 I didn’t know the sample though except that it was obviously some cover of Joe South’s country hit, “(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden.” I gotta say, it’s a pretty great song on a few different levels. Not only is the songwriting strong but there’s a lot of [...]
