JOE BATAAN + PETE RODRIGUEZ: MIS NOTAS (PLUS ANOTHER GIVEAWAY)

Some time in 2009, I was contacted by Wax Poetics, who are helping to manage the Fania catalog, about writing liner notes for a few releases and whether there were any titles I thought would be worthy of reissuing. High on my list was this LP:

Joe Bataan: Under the Street Lamp
Unwed Mother
Both from Singin’ Some Soul (Fania, 1972). Also available as a digital download.

I’ve briefly touched on this album in previous posts but never in a dedicated way and that’s an oversight on my part. This is, hands [...]

SMANG SMANG!

I put this up on the Soul Sides Facebook page but I decided it deserved its own post. Watching the video, it’s pretty clear this is meant to be a parody of sorts (the Milli Vanilli coif should be your first red flag) but listening to the song, without paying attention to the images, this song sounds like it’d easily fit into a mix of post-jerkin’ tunes and I’ll go one further and say: I’m kind of feeling this (except maybe for the Flynt Flossy’s cameo). It reminds me a lot of the beat for Cali Swag District’s summer [...]

WEDDING DAZE

Billy Stewart: Cross My Heart
From 7″ (Chess, 1968). Also on The Best Of.

Cupid: Cupid Shuffle
From Time For a Change (Atlantic, 2007)

Biz Markie/Pharcyde: Passin’ Biz By (O-Dub’s Blend)

As I mentioned a few weeks back, I had the privilege of traveling out to Charleston SC to DJ a wedding by a couple I had never met but who were fans of the site. (Thanks again KF!)

Really fun evening, especially since the groom’s father is a guitarist who has had his own band for years now and every [...]

LAS 4 MONEDAS: CASHING IN

Las 4 Monedas: Buena Suerte
From Vol. 2 (Palacio, 1969)

Las 4 Monedas: Trauma
From 7″ (Palacia, 1973)

I first became acquainted with this Venezuelan group (“the four coins” as translated into English) through Murphy’s Law who had a copy of that “Trauma” 7″. At the time, I thought the group was Spanish (since they had a few releases that came out on Spanish labels) and that particular era of the group, Las 4 Monedas y Gregory, clearly seemed like a post-J5 attempt to bring in a younger pre-pubescent singing to [...]

CATCHING UP WITH MAYER

First off, apologies for taking over a week off in between posts. Busy busy busy.

Anyways, was just looking over the fall/winter tour schedule for Mayer Hawthorne and realized I forgot to post about some of his releases this past year. Given that he’s “in between albums,” his output has still been surprisingly better than you might expect. In chrono order, here’s three that have stood out to me:

Mayer Hawthorne: Thin Moon
From 7″ (Stonesthrow/Wax Poetics, 2010)

This James Pants’ cover appeared as a spring issue 7″ insert for Wax Poetics and [...]

HOLY GHOST POSTS: JACKSON SOUTHERNAIRES

The Jackson Southernaires: On My Way Home
Until I Die
From Too Late (Songbird, 1964?)

I was initially turned onto this from Jesse’s incredible gospel soul post and thankfully, this album is probably the easiest one to track down of all that he shared. The Jackson Southernaires debut album for the Duke/Peacock gospel subsidiary Songbird was a huge hit for the group and it’s not difficult to track down copies of the LP for well under $20. (Strangely, for such a hit, it doesn’t seem to be on CD).

Jesse had included “On [...]

WILLIE WEST + MYRON AND E: NEW TIMMION 7″s

Willie West and the High Society Bros: Lesson of Love Pt. 1 (snippet)
From 7″ (Timmion, 2010)

Myron and E: Pot Club (snippet)
From 7″ (fortchoming on Timmion, 2010)

Got a lil care package from Helsinki the other day: new 7″s by both Willie West and Myron and E. I’ve written about both in the past and right now, NOLA soul slinger and the Bay Area’s dynamic duo seem to be holding it down for Timmion’s main releases. Always good to hear new stuff from them, especially with the fragile [...]
